How Can I Get Sponsors for a Fashion Show?

I am a fashion designer and am planning a show. How can I get companies to sponsor my event?

I've gotten sponsors for different events (never a fashion show) and it's all about finding a way in which its a win and a success for the sponsors. That means you have to think like they do. What do they want? They want exposure for their business among their ideal customers.

The first thing it makes a lot of sense to do is choose a charity that will get a percentage of the proceeds from the event. Aligning with a charity is not only a good thing to do in giving back - but it will also give you greater opportunities for exposure. Oh, and a charitable organization can sometimes be really good when it comes to helping you move a lot of tickets for the event.

Once you have a charity then go to your local newspaper and ask them to be a sponsor. They probably won't give you money - but if they like the idea they might give you news coverage before the event and free ad space and this all is very helpful in having a successful event. You need to position yourself as a hot, rising star in the fashion world and someone that people should be watching. Position yourself as "The Next Big Thing."

Once you've done that - go to businesses you would like to have as sponsors. Tell them a percentag of the proceeds are going to XXX charity and the newspaper is one of the sponsors. Tell them their name will be mentioned in all the promotional materials and in the printed program for the event.

One of the big concerns sponsors have is how many attendees will you have? This is an opportunity for them to get some exposure for their business - so the number of people in attendance matters to them. A lot. Tell them you're going to promote like crazy - and follow through and do it. Make it a huge success, attract a big crowd, a lot of buzz - and the second time - believe me - it will be a lot easier to attract sponsors.

See if you can put together a prize package for the event which will help draw in more attendees. Businesses will give away prizes of their merchandise to get exposure. Two nights at a classy hotel in your city. Dinner for two at a ritzy restaurant. Two dozen long stemmed roses from a florist. A bottle of champagne and two champagne glasses from a wine shop. And the biggest most important prize of all for the contest winner - an outfit of your designs.

Having a contest connected with the event will bring even more interest and make it more of a citywide event rather than simply a show of your fashions. Make it inclusive rather than exclusive. That means look for ways to include more businesses in the community (non-competing of course) rather than less.

Hope this is helpful to you.

All the best,

Determine what is in it for them......and promote that.
